This isn’t just one of the best pop records I’ve heard all year; it’s one of the best period.
A Different Kind of Human is an ‘ecologically themed’ record. These songs sound like they came directly from the centre of the fucking earth. They are urgent and powerful. They make constant reference to our environment and civilisation, “Just like the seed, everything wants to live…”. And they demand your undivided attention.
Then there’s the moment late in the sequence that stops you dead in your tracks. It’s the moment when the Imogen Heap-esque title track hits. The melody is powerful enough, but the lyrics add a whole other incredible dimension. They seem to tell a story of a higher power, an alien life form looking down on planet earth, specifically at those of us who are fighting for a better environment or better society. The world has become so corrupt, it’s no longer “a place for [people] like [us].”
“I guess you are a different kind of human,” she sings, and if that doesn’t give you chills, I don’t know what will. But wait… it’s not all about Mother Nature. Aurora proves she is just as passionate about fixing society’s gender barriers. In standout track ‘Daydreamer’, one of many that prove she exists on this incredible, unique plain, somewhere between Betty Who and Florence Welch, she sings “I know I’m just a girl but can I change lives?”
The answer to this, and to any other women asking the same questions, is a resounding yes. Yes you fucking can.
