First song you remember listening to…
The song that has stuck in my head the most from a really early age is ‘Perfect’ by Fairground Attraction, it brings back so many memories every time I hear it.
First song you ever wrote…
The first song I wrote was about my dad’s best friend who died. I was around 10. It was something I was really proud of.
First instrument you played…
I started learning guitar when I was in my teens but never really took it up properly, I really want to learn piano. That’s definitely something I’ll take up in the near future.
First band you ever saw live…
The first band I saw live was Stereophonics in 2008. It was in Birmingham and I couldn’t believe the amount of people there, I hadn’t seen any band before them. It was one of the best and worst nights of my life. I hadn’t ate anything since that morning and I ended up passing out on the last song and got dragged over the barrier and taken away in a wheel chair. It was so embarrassing, I’ve never lived it down.
First gig you ever played…
Weirdly, the first gig I ever played was me and my brother in front of some publishers from London who were interested in working with us. It was terrifying at the time but luckily it went well.
Have you got any new material coming out this year?
We have a release coming really soon, it’s been so long since we’ve had a song coming out. We’re hoping to get two releases before the end of the year.
Are you looking forward to your upcoming London show?
I can’t wait! I’ve never played ‘The Waiting Room‘ but I know people who have and have said it’s a great venue.
What can people expect from your live show?
A lot of emotion and honesty.
You’ve got quite a vintage aesthetic, what about the past inspires you?
The past has always interested me, I definitely take influence from the 80s mostly, I love the fashion and the music scene.
‘Blindfold’ seems to be quite a politically charged track, the video uses military footage also, is this linked to the idea of a dystopian world?
I remember writing ‘Blindfold’ in a studio with my brother and Ed Thomas. It was something that, at the time, we all felt strongly about. I wanted it to be thought provoking and send a message of moving forward not backwards.
Where do you access all the old-school, vintage footage used in your videos?
For ‘Blindfold’ is was public domain footage, I spent days looking through videos and editing. For the ‘Skinful’ video it was family VHS footage that my friend Leoni created.
What power does music have to change the world do you think?
To me music is the one thing that unites people and can change how you think and feel, and we’re given such a massive platform to do good. Music has definitely taken me out of some dark places.
