Blending folk, bluegrass, Americana and indie with his natural song writing abilities, John-Robert is one of those new artists that feels wise beyond their years. Ahead of making his UK debut, he ran us through his stunning EP, Garden Snake.
Come Pick Me Up
Wrote it with my friend Junior Mesa the second time we ever met. The song came about organically, and I was heavily inspired by The Blasting Company’s work on “Over The Garden Wall”. It’s a quant “Let’s drink, dance, and get to know each other because life is too short” kinda tune. I played it at every show for four years before I released it. I’ve never grew tired of playing it, and it has since brought the best people and opportunities into my life.
Sweet Child
I was trying to put myself back on the market after a break-up… it felt awkward. I was still missing that person whilst attempting to move on.
Westward Bound
I was in a long distance relationship after moving from Virginia to Los Angeles. When we decided it wasn’t going to work, it made the new city I was in that much more lonely. The song is a reminder and an invitation for that person- if ever you find yourself in the area, don’t be a stranger.
Road-trip
My little brother got a job in Montana and I decided to join him on his drive from Virginia. I was hoping I’d find closure from my break up by way of exploring my wanderlust. Come to find out, I would continue to feel sad, just in more scenic places.
Good Days’ll Come
I wanted to give myself a sense of optimism while acknowledging my current state of depression and existential dread. It’s a song of assurance. Now doesn’t mean forever, and forgiveness takes time.
