Bec O’Malley is releasing his new single, ‘See It From Here’ later this week. Since we put on his first headline show at Deaf Institute last November he’s had quite a rise, releasing music (finally!), playing festivals and headlining tours across the country. We caught up with him to find out some more of his firsts.
First Song You Wrote
The first song I ever wrote was one called “see what I’ve done” I wrote it when I was about 14 and released it with an old band of mine. Considering it was one of my first it was actually pretty good. I still play it when I’m bored sometimes. Was very different to my style of writing now however as it was heavily influenced by the indie and British rock scene I was engulfed in at the time but ended up getting pretty bored of pretty quick. Although I do still listen to some of that music.
First Live Performance
My first live show would’ve been at my dad’s bar when I was 15. It was a bar called Nook and they used to do a great open mic on a Thursday where you’d get some crazy heads in there. They were either mad talented or batshit crazy. I used to love it though and feel like after that performance I was hooked and knew this was what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I would never forget it.

First Official Concert
The first concert I went to would be Christy Moore when I was about 8 with my dad grandma and auntie. Went to see him somewhere in Manchester and pretty sure I fell asleep for half his set. But it will always stick with me, I loved his writing, storytelling and even humour in his songs. He’s one of the best to do it Christy Moore and I’d love to go and see him again. After this concert though I loved going to see bands and new artists play, I went to Glastonbury 5 times with my family from the age of 14-20 years old.
First Festival
If this means the first festival I attended it would be Glastonbury. I started at the very top and skipped all the smaller ones. My parents always brought us growing up and I was absolutely in love with the place it is a dream to play there one day. The first proper festival I played was over this summer at the first state fayre. I loved that place too it was such a class experience to see people come to my set and sing all my words back. Definitely wanna play there again.

First Headline Show
My first headline show was actually about a year ago at the Deaf Institute lodge in Manchester with The Rodeo Mag! We had it sold out without any songs out which is crazy to think about. And we’ll be returning again to the upstairs venue in November which is also sold out. Cannot wait to go back there with the band and play all the new songs I have coming out. It’s always been a favourite venue of mine the deaf institute and I’m looking forward to seeing it grow into bigger and bigger venues as the days go on.
Bec O’Malley embarks on a sold-out tour next month and has already announced a new run of dates for 2027, tickets on sale now.
