Last time we saw these lot, they’d packed out Gorilla at Manchester Psych Fest, many rushing across the road after Courtney Barnett’s headline set to catch a glimpse at one of the most exciting new bands around. Now, their in the midst of a residency at YES. Though the first date saw them in the smaller setting of The Basement, tonight they make the step up to The Pink Room, and it doesn’t seem to affect them at all.
It’s full, full to the brim. The pints we left on the side have been nicked so we’re forced to get another quick round in before the show starts. The band walked on to the Tequila Song, (y’know, the funky one where everyone goes, “ahh tequila” in unison?) and it was tricky to recognise Our Syd – their very vocal lead singer – as he was actually wearing clothes for once. That didn’t last for long, as his shirt came off two songs in. Does it ever stay on for long?
There’s a Hacienda feel to the night, as the new material appears to pay tribute to an era so engrained in the city’s fabric. It’s heavy, the synths sound like a UFO is landing on the roof. And, if a UFO did actually land on the roof, those pesky aliens would be pretty impressed with YES’ £2.95 Amstel’s (I’m still in shock myself) and with the mature performance of these newcomers.
