LUST FOR YOUTH RELEASE A NEON DREAM OF AN ALBUM

Lust For Youth thrive on producing delicious slices of shimmering synth-pop and they have stuck to the recipe for satisfying results on their new self-titled album. A stylish offering, this album feels like a soundtrack to an adventure around sophisticated European capitals. As such, I would highly recommend delving into this Scandinavian synth gem and allow yourself to feel immediately ten times cooler.

The tracks are impeccably produced, with the layers of synth and guitar lines draped over retro club beats. It is intense – blissfully euphoric, then later dark and brooding. The drums snap and thump on the beat and the synths are more glossy than a recently polished bowling alley. All punctuated by Hannes Norvinde’s sparse monotone vocal lines, it combines to create a cultured sound that’s a rewarding listen.

The album makes a case for itself to sit alongside the elder statesman of the New Wave, synth-pop genre and impressively, doesn’t fall too far short of the mark. The echoey blend of synth and guitar instantly recalls the sound of Low-Life era New Order; the strength of singles ‘Great Concerns’ and ‘By No Means’ certainly enough to get Bernard Sumner hot under the collar. That said, there is still plenty of variation to get excited about, the dancey club beat on ‘Adrift’ and ‘Insignificant’ travels with you transitioning from sparkly upbeat synth to an intensely morose conclusion.

Slick production, beautiful balance between joy and despair and some synth-pop bangers mean this album is ‘By No Means’ a bad listen.

Haiku Review

Some stylish synth-pop,

Euphoria and darkness
in equal degree.
