Guilty Pleasures Anonymous: The Vengaboys

The Vengabus is coming, and I am getting a weekly ticket.

Hi, I’m Tara Dalton and I’m a Venga-holic.

The late 90s and 00s birthed some crazy things, like velour tracksuits, mini mini skirts, and double denim. But the era blessed us with the start of these Eurodance icons, and ever since I have been truly thankful.

Nothing fills me with joy more than being in a busy environment, whether it’s on a bus or walking through town, and hearing that dance synth creep in. I just can’t help but smile smugly, knowing no-one else can sense the bubblegum dance blasting through my headphones.

To me, they aren’t just a band, but the epitome of party. On a bad day, you don’t need mopey guitars playing sad songs, you need a dose of the Dutch dance! The cheesy lyrics and dated beats are so wrong and yet so right, with every listen adding more fuel to the multicoloured European fire.

I remember when they last toured and I couldn’t bring myself to go, because: 1. I would have to admit I liked them, and 2. I would have to convince my parents to take me. Even now, two years on, I still think about that decision, and with no upcoming tours in sight… well… I have my regrets.
