Would you believe, I’ve lived in Manchester for nearly 3 years and last night was my time at Northern Quarter’s Band on The Wall? For a smaller venue, the staging is class, spanning long enough for drummers to not be swallowing their own knees, or for guitar necks to not be in a fencing face off.
Even in the blacks and beiges of their on-stage ensemble, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets brought a multicoloured madness from down under, showering the crowd in sprawling riffs and long hair flips.
Vocalist Jack McEwan’s hair cascaded over his six strings, but never hindered his fast-paced fingers and their ability to shred. Crumpets blend of old fuzz and new pop made for a dynamic mix, allowing you to catch your breath and then swiftly lose it in their wooze.
The name signals you’re about to witness something bizarre, something peculiar. But this peculiarity came in the form of effortless performance; striking intense instrumental that, to the naked eye, looked so easy but was flowing at a million miles an hour.
