Weyes Blood

Live: Weyes Blood

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good lyric. Friends and family regularly tease me about my obsession with words in a song. “Go and read poetry if you’re going to ignore the instruments” they mutter. “I do like the instrumental part to” I sheepishly reply.

Seeing Weyes Blood live, her lyrics are clearer, because her voice is clearer, because I’m not listening to her tracks through my shitty Apple earphones, rather they’re being blasted into my ears from the speaker literally above my head. Pure, clear, angelic, and all the cliched adjectives used to describe someone with a stupidly good vocals; she was ethereal. She’s funny, too. Pausing before ‘Something To Believe’, she asked the crowd to vote on whether the moon landing was filmed by Stanley Kubrick and indeed faked, bringing the sci-fi sounds to life with a slice of satire. Several members of the crowd popped their hands up in agreement, before Weyes questioned where the hell ‘moon rock’ comes from, the silly bastards.

There was an unusually tall crowd, too. Even I was struggling to see, and I stand at a modest 6ft plus, meaning the tiny bugger next to me was properly struggling, even resorting to using his video camera to gain a better view. The tall crowd and restricted view wasn’t helped by the shite venue, which I’m sure slopes downwards from the stage, and has 4 massive, fuck-off pillars blocking half the crowd. Not having that, not having it one bit. Luckily, Weyes plays music you only really need to listen to. Live, the delivery is mind-boggling. Close your eyes and you’re transported to god knows where for an hour and a bit. Good stuff.
