Track of the Week: Hannah’s Little Sister – Gum
Hannah’s Little Sister are back with another shimmering slice of kaleidoscopic guitars and jaunting synths. It’s unnerving and dark, but Hannah’s Little Sister lean into the chaos. It slides from frantic and fervent to dreamy beautifully, constantly retaining their well-deserved anger at capitalism – what’s not to love?
Honeyboys – Maple Blue
You know when its sweltering weather as the big star in the sky blazes down on you, and out of nowhere a cool breeze roams past and it’s that slight feeling of chill ecstasy? That is exactly what the Honeyboys bring, goosebumps and all, with their rose-tinted single ‘Maple Blues’. It’s fusion of indie pop and smooooth jazz goes together so purely, it’s a light hearted bop that shouldn’t be stopped.
Hugo M. Hardy – Trainspotting
‘Trainspotting’ is a gut-punch. If, like me, your first associations were with Ewan McGregor larking about Edinburgh encouraging us all to ‘choose life’, you might be in with a nice surprise with Hugo M. Hardy’s latest. Deliciously tender and soft, his haunting acoustics mellow the twinkling strings that accompany them. It is complete tear-your-heart-out magic.
IDER – Saturday
Does the opening piano remind me of Twilight? Yes. Does the track fall hauntingly beautiful upon the ears as it’s blue harmonies slowly build toward a feeling of longing? Also yes. Should this song be added to your late night playlists? Yes, yes it should.
Laura Fell – Cold
Pathetic fallacy at it’s finest, Fell will bring a sense of cold and cool through her looming presence and sturdy vocals. Clicking and clacking percussion drives this track from for me, mirroring the meandering search for answers Laura lyrically embarks on.
Oh Papa – Change That Tune
This is the very definition of chill. It’s all there: pretty acoustics, calming vocals, relaxing harmonies. It has such an ethereal feel – you almost don’t want it to end.
Peel – Citizen X
What a woozy wonder. After finding out both members of Peel are also visual artists, Citizen X and its kaleidoscopic groove began to fall into place. The guitars sound glistening, dripping in psychedelia and just bursting with colour. Just a tip, close your eyes whilst you listen, and just feel yourself get lost in the waves of Peel.
Regent – Today
Rock ‘n’ Roll rawness lies deep within Regent’s new single. Behind each guitar string echoes a story of love and loss, wrapping you into what feels like an Americana melodrama.
Rebecka Reinhard – Stamford Hill
This song is catchy in a strange way – you think you’ve forgotten about it until you find yourself humming it. It has a great guitar riff, and the chorus adds a perfect level of spice to it all.
STACEY – One Woman
For a song written in 2019, STACEY has captured the current climate of 2020 perfectly; having the world weigh heavy on your shoulders as you try and figure out a way to make a change. In her lilting calls, though the words she sings are bittersweet, the smooth psychedelic of the guitars push a powerful feeling that ‘maybe, you can do it.’
Starling – No Leader
You can’t spell Starling without the ‘Star’ quality she holds. With a falsetto tone to die for, Starling storms into the pop blend resulting in an exciting listen and a nice two step as you boogie along.
