THE WEEKLY ROUND-UP (14/06/19)

Cover Artist: Chloe Howl

Chloe Howl – In The Middle (Sad Banger)
A crackle of vinyl. A fuzz and whisper. An L.A. noir film. A box of popcorn. A riveting plot-line. An enthralling climax. Chloe Howl’s new one is dark, but it gets you dancing.

KAINA – Could Be A Curse Feat. Sen Morimoto
A nice track for a nice sunny day… shame it’s been pissing it down. I’ve got plenty of time for this, it’s gentle and smooth, and goes down like a well earnt Orange Juice, not from concentrate but freshly squeezed.

Swim Deep – To Feel Good
With choirs, keys and spoken verse, this is not the Swim Deep we thought we knew. Dreamy and direct, this new track will hit you hard.

Mini Mansions – I’m In Love
This trio just produces pop-rock gold dust and ‘I’m In Love’ is no different. A bite and a bark, it’s aggressive. But there’s a softer side spelt out by the title, Mikey Shoes is in love. He’s in loveeeeeee.

Bat For Lashes – Kids in the Dark
From the shore-side-at-dusk imagery on the cover to the ethereal, synth-tinged backbone, ‘Kids in the Dark’ is a delightful slice of 80’s nostalgia. If Mike and Eleven aren’t slow dancing to this in the upcoming season of Stranger Things, I will be sorely disappointed.

Love Fame Tragedy – My Cheating Heart
A strong riff to open and a very catchy chorus – and you recognise the vocals, right? Not quite the return of The Wombats, but we wouldn’t blame you for thinking so.

Honey Harper – Tomorrow Never Comes
Yeehaw cowboy. Giddy the fuck up. Honey Harp’s voice is a smooth as the sweet nectar toast-topping ingredient itself. Did they have honey in the Wild West? Who knows.

Outer Spaces- YWLGOML
You Won’t Let Go Of My Life, is a promising sign of what’s to come. A strong and surprisingly catchy guitar song which features a late Lennon solo-era sax which is enough to make me melt.

Marika Hackman – The One

This is bloody good. It swears and says it as it is, it’s impeccably produced and it’s got them synths in it that your mum used to like back in the day. Can’t fault it, in fact, I’m pretty sure I’ll be hearing it pretty soon on Made in Chelsea… they have a sick indie soundtrack alright!?
