TYLER, THE CREATOR OR TYLER, THE COPIER?

Tyler, The Creator becomes the first solo rapper in history to reach number one, with his self-produced album, IGOR. Embracing themes such as love and self-empowerment, IGOR is a relatable record. The use of 80’s synth and a Theremin take me back to playing old-fashioned video games, the nostalgia hitting as hard as a punch from AJ.

All to often, those rushes of nostalgia hit you a little too hard, as you reminisce on the Gorillaz’s earlier days, the synth and electronic patterns of Plastic Beach making you wonder when the next screech from Albarn may appear. Should we be calling him Tyler, the copier? Could be a tad harsh, but there’s somethin’ in it.

The sampling of interview clips from his idols adds an air of creativity and contribute to the free-flowing nature of the record and offers a touch of uniqueness and authenticity. Furthermore, it taps into the variety of listeners in this modern age. The classic oldies who love to listen from front-to-back, and the ADD newbies, who prefer a pic’n’mix of singles.

A nostalgic flair and a piece of history, it’s easier to see why people are ‘voting for IGOR’.

Haiku Review
Copy-cat record,
Maybe a little bit harsh,
Authentic at times
