The Round-Up (16/10/20)

Track of the Week: Benny Sings ft. Mac DeMarco – Rolled Up
Weird and wonderful, the unique pairing of Benny Sings and Mac DeMarco is just as odd as you’d expect. A subdued yet expansive backing track partners perfectly with the distinctive vocals of Benny and DeMarco as synths and a smooth funked laced bassline cater to their every vocal need. The video is unconventional as well, you should really check it out.

Blanketman – Beach Body
Lockdown might be keeping you inside, but with this addictive banger you’ll feel like you’re catching the waves. Wrapped in sardonic sways, Blanketman are creating their own edge in music where, instead of a breath of fresh air, they’re a sizzle on a hot pan. Well more exciting

Children of the State – Hot Money
Get down in the nitty gritty and ravish in the fuzzy ‘Hot Money’. Wanting to give a feeling of unease, the Children of The State ran instrument tracks through a broken tape recorder and you can hear the squeal and squeaks of brass echo across the excited riffs. Storming belter tha.

CIRCE – Ruined Your Sons
Thee perfect song to badass walk to. Dark basslines and drifting vocals, its a haunting electro beauty. Is that a goosebump on my arm? I think it is.

EFÉ – Garden
An almost Kyoto Garden level of tranquility ripples in EFÉ’s lean green single. Plant this one in your playlist, and watch it blossom into a glistening bud before your eyes.

Friedberg – Pass Me On
With psychedelic visuals and a woozy guitar shred, Friedberg brings you into their echo chamber of emotions, ‘Pass Me On’ is a swirling sensation, encapsulating those feelings of finally being free and honestly, if you want to lose yourself for three minutes this is the song for you.

James Blake – Before
James Blake’s title track on the new “Before” EP continues his trend of singing about being deeply in love. Get out your headphones for this one. Its mechanical and orchestral sounds are grand and imposing – this is a song meant to make you feel vulnerable.

Joesef – Does It Make You Feel Good
‘Does It Make You Feel Good’ leads you into its rhythm with some triumphant trumpets and boy, does it bop. It’s unfiltered, fresh bedroom pop and it’s already made me excited for summer nights again.

Josie Proto – Puddles
Full of a youthful glow, Josie Proto is here to light your weekend with this revert to those childish but fun antics. About ‘Puddles’ Josie said, “I want to romanticise being in a relationship where you are best friends and do harmless and innocent things.” It’s hard not to feel young love as Josie harmonises so delightfully.

Lizzie Reid – Seamless
Think of the last time you got an intense feeling of shivers, and multiply that feeling by ten. That’s what Lizzie Reid’s ‘Seamless’ makes me feel like. Her deliciously deep, plaintive vocals are completely beguiling, and the rousing strings that accompany them are equally evocative. It’s just over four minutes of complete captivation – the sort that will have you revel in every second of it.

merci, mercy – Tequila & Lemonade
A bubblegum pop cocktail that goes down smoooth. ‘Tequila & Lemonade’ is the kind of song a tiktoker would go crazy for. Ahh, I can see the two steps now alongside meri, mercy’s light lyrics and explosive Benee-like fun.

Pearl Charles – Take Your Time
I feel like at some point each month someone delivers a new spin on country music, and I’m all here for it. With sliding guitars and line dance inducing breakdowns a plenty, all the boxes have been ticked. It’s time for a hoedown, baby.

Pet Grotesque – Pingin’ Alone
You know those cut screens in That 70’s Show? I can imagine becoming immersed in those funky colour fades, you’d feel the shimmery grooves Pet Grotesque brings forward with Pingin’ Alone. While sonically harmonious, the bending lyrics show a darker side to the bedroom-popper, venturing into a less than calm comedown. Get your Fez on, and give Pet a listen.

Sharon van Etten – Let Go
I get excited every time I find out Sharon van Etten has released new music. Then roughly three to four minutes later I’m washed over with melancholy. ‘Let Go’ is no different. I should have known better.

spill tab – santé
Quelle beauté! French-Korean artist spill tab has taken my breath away with this airy, almost hypnotising tune. In a daze, it’s an endearing listen, pulling you in by the tie and swooning into your ear. Before you know it, it’s over, and that replay button’s looks pretty good.

SUN JANE – Karen O
“It’s about the kind of night you let heartache swallow you whole,” the band said about the track, and as I swallow the thump in my throat, I can confirm it paints exactly that picture. In SUN JANE’S atmospheric vocals and relaxed instrumental you can almost see your breath in the cold, but its not a suffocating chill, more like an early morning release.

The Stylus Method – Sugar Plum Mary
Leeds lads The Stylus Method are back with another dose of bluesy, 60s inspired rock. ‘Sugar Plum Mary’ taunts you and throws you back a few decades, in the best way. With subtle yet stunning harmonies and enough groovy instrumentals to see you through the next decade, The Stylus Method’s sound is some of the most creative around.
