Track of the Week: Anna McClellan – Raisin
I’m not big on raisins, but Anna McClellan’s new single is sweet as. Anna’s light vocals perfectly compliment the chaotic instruments behind her, and, as she sings ‘Weight is off in mid-float‘ it’s easy to feel like you’re joining her in mid-flight, gliding along on a hell of a good ride.
Arlo Parks – Green Eyes
This is possibly the definition of chill. Calming drum beats, pretty lyrics, and melodies to die for – it’s all there. Everything is made ten times better by gorgeous, soothing vocals that have you completely captivated.
Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard – 30,000 Megabucks
The Cardiff outfit show off their classic rock talents. Combining an addictive vocal melody with ACDC guitar riffs galore, ‘30,000 Megabucks’ is a neat prog bop with a chorus you’ll struggle to get out of your head. A bit like one of those guilty pleasures you remember from childhood, the old-school drum beats keep your feet moving in time, your teeth smiling and your head shaking rhythmically back and forth. Get. It. On.
Ela Minus – Dominique
‘Dominique’ is about those horrible days you spend alone, stuck at a computer in your pjs, feeling grim. Slowly building through a mix of clicks and ticks, the track explores how you reevaluate your life after the people around you disappear. Talking to yourself, having to cook your own tea, missing your friends, Ela covers it all, with a smooth and rhythmic synth and drum machine in support. Lovely.
For Those I Love – Top Scheme
A mixture of cold reality and hard hitting truth, ‘Top Scheme’ is less a diatribe and more a tirade against the state of poverty in the Republic of Ireland. ‘It’s just number and stats until it’s your life,’ David Balfe spits, on this must must must listen track.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Automation
Gizz return with their classic microtonal riffs in this robotic, rotating track. It’s a pleasure to hear them hark back to 2017’s Flying Microtonal Banana. One less drummer hasn’t changed their sound one bit. Wonderful.
Maddi Jean – Greedy
Maddi Jean releases her second track, ‘Greedy’ a fab sad-pop track fit for anyone who’s had a bad week. Chin up mate, Maddi’s got your back and it’ll get better.
Phoebe Green – Golden girl
‘Golden Girl’ perfectly captures the overwhelming pressure of achieving perfection and the need to be alone. ‘I don’t mind from time to time / being left alone and I wish you/ wouldn’t get so blue‘ Green sings with her lyrics sounding like they’ve been ripped straight from a journal. Layered over guitars and synths, ‘Golden Girl’ is a musing and introspective indie-pop gem. Well worth a listen.
Seraphina Simone – O.M.D
Seraphina Simone’s new single sounds like the weightless excitement of a fresh sunrise. Dark rumbling synths give way to a melodic tune about yearning love, and confessing your own feelings to those who need to hear it. You sitting on any nice things to say to someone?
Tim Burgess – The Ascent of the Ascended
A hauntingly fun track, centering around where you wanna be and what you do to get there. Starting with a funky blend of vintage guitar and spooky utterances, the track ascends into a moving climax midway through before cranking it up, and descending into a vortex of psych craziness. A rollercoaster of a single, if there ever was one.
Two Tribes – Cruel Sensuality
Punchy synths and pulsating basslines are rife throughout this Two Tribes single. Creating a soundscape that puts you directly in the middle of a packed club dancefloor. With the whiff of a dodgy smoking area, this song will easily get your feet moving. Let’s dance.
