Track of the Week: Bleach Lab – Old Ways
This is one of those tracks that feels like it’s been around for years; Jenna Kyle’s vocals are on intoxicatingly good form on ‘Old Ways’ – set to a backdrop of taunting guitar lines and hypnotic percussion, this latest track is completely heavenly. It’s another classy release from Bleach Lab, who are radiating confidence at the moment. An assured band well in control of their future.
Ailsa Tully – Parasite
Ailsa Tully has a very unique voice. It’s like candy floss, but with no added sugar. Make sense? Who knows. ‘Parasite’ floats along easily, like a lazy river, but its lyrics pack a bite. So, like a lazy river but with a crocodile in it. Yeah? Yeah.
Art d’Ecco – TV God
With its fierce bassline and protruding piano progressions, Art d’Ecco’s ‘TV God’ has struck the match alight for modern glam rock. The track is doused in an unspoken swagger, with an additional tendency to send you deep in thought, reminiscing over deep synth-pop singles. ‘TV God’ has a silky smooth consistency and is quick to throw a quick blow with its celebrity-obsessed lyrics.
Bernice – It’s Me, Robin
After a three-year hiatus, enigmatic group ‘Bernice’ have plunged straight back into the world of dream-pop with no struggle. ‘It’s Me, Robin’ is floaty and ethereal in its melodies, and continuously dainty and delicate with its signature vocals and lyrics. The bubbly instrumentation harmonises together, creating a dreamlike atmosphere for global listeners.
dodie – Hate Myself
There’s something about dodie’s soundscape that just hits the nail right on the head. It’s complicated and subtle at once, and distinctively dodie above all. ‘Hate Myself’ is no different: muted layers of instrumentation and harmonies build up into something carefully brilliant. Love it.
Katy Kirby – Juniper
Katy Kirby’s latest is the perfect early morning soundtrack. Sun filtering through your windows, bleary-eyed – it’s primed to help you see in your day smiling. The track’s growing intensity at first seems at odds with her light, airy vocals, but it’s a golden combo to shine a little light at the end of your week.
The Lottery Winners ft. Frank Turner – Start Again
Wow, what a lovely, feel-good anthem. The Lottery Winners have transported the sound of the tens into the twenties and brought Frank Turner along for the ride. Mark my words: on this one, The Lottery Winners are the next big thing. You can quote me on that.
Night Flight – Dreaming
‘Dreaming’ screams early 2000s romcom in the best way possible. It’s breezy and firmly stuck in the clouds, and all the better for it. Swirling guitars and lush harmonies combine to create Night Flight’s prettiest track yet.
Yard Act – Dark Days
If Artic Monkeys met Mark E. Smith in the pub and shared a few pints, the result would be Yard Act. Jangly and jumpy guitar overlaid with joyful preachings of gloomy messages on this new track.
