The Round-Up (05/03/21)

Track of the Week: Michael Gallagher – Lula
You may be struggling to meet new people with this current lockdown continuing. Maybe Tinder isn’t working like it used to. Bumble? Pointless app. Hinge? It requires effort, right? Here’s where Michael Gallagher comes in. Meet ‘Lula’, a fun indie pop song with a casual coolness we expect to continue associating with the newcomer.

Josh Phillips – New Shadow
‘New Shadow’ is an intriguing number. Makes me think of dystopian things. It feels like it’s watching you. All day. Every day. Scary shit.

Maple Glider – Good Thing
I have granted you with an exclusive pass to Maple Glider, the excellent solo project of Meblourne singer-songwriter Tori Zietsch . ‘Good Thing’ is a delicate ballad, but with all the emotional resonance of a greek tragedy. Stay tuned for more.

Lady Dan – No Home
All rise for Lady Dan. Regal strings play, before an acoustic guitar drops in uninvited to signal her arrival. Lady Dan strolls in, unaware of the busy room around her and buzzing, irrelevant murmurs. Her voice takes over. The room is now empty. It’s just you, her, and the song.

Green Day – Here Comes the Shock
Well, they’ve certainly shocked me… with how bland this song is. What an uninspired pile of dookie. Get it? Too easy? …I’ll see myself out.

The Howlers – I Don’t Love You All the Time
Leather jacket-wearing, rock’n’rolling, Londoners The Howlers are back with a raucous new track. Play it loud and proud. There’s no messing around here, it’s all gas and no brakes with the type of guitar licks that is just begging to be played on a big soundsystem.

St. VincentPay Your Way in Pain
New St. Vincent. REJOICE! Yes, Ms. Clark is back with a sticky, disco-infused track that is sure to ignite a long-burning fire of excitement in the music world. And, rightfully so; when St. Vincent teases a new album, you can guarantee it’ll be a good’un.

Oracle Sisters – I Don’t Wanna Move
Put your feet up. Grab yourself a cup of tea, coffee or whatever else it is people drink to unwind. Oracle Sisters prescribe a relaxing evening with good music. You should follow their orders.

Walker feat. Satchy – Hands
Smooth-as-butter track here. Californian residents Walker (vocals) and guitarist Satchy fit together like two peas in a pod, creating a short but soulfultrack. Enough with the food metaphors. Just take my word for it and give it a listen.

Girl in Red – Serotonin
Beneath the head-bopping bass instrumental of Girl in Red’s new track is a vital story about depression and self-harm. It’s introspective, raw and an altogether brilliant track that solidifies the Norwegian singer’s knack for songwriting.

Japanese Breakfast – Be Sweet
Exquisite pop delivered straight to your ears by soloist Japanese Breakfast (Michelle Zauner). Stick around for that synth-laden chorus and you’re sure to be singing your heart out.

Temptress – SOS
A superb new track from London R’n’B duo Temptress. Vocalists Vlad and Jess deliver such consistently soothing sounds, you’d be mistaken for thinking that they’re just having a day-to-day conversation. Bonus points for producing what can only be described a luscious instrumental. A real delight.

Middle Kids – Stacking Chairs
Remember when you used to see how many stacked chairs you could carry across the drama classroom to impress your mates at school? No real relevance to this great track from Aussie rockers, Middle Kids, but the title got me reminiscing. Anyway, check this out, as it’s pretty damn good.
