King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have released one of the weirdest tracks of the year so far -‘Cyboogie’, and it’s enough to get your keyboard tapping and disco drive spinning. Anyway, the video is retro and groovy, It’s new age Kraftwork with the humour of DEVVO. What the fuck am I saying?
Stu MacKenzie performs the entirety of the song from within a motorised synth board, playing another synth through some handy arm holes, and pulling faces that look remarkably like Malcolm McDowell as Alex De Large. The band, dressed in monotone red and wearing helmets, dance and play around with various knobs and switches. I don’t really have a clue what’s going on, but the dramatic audio-visual can’t stop you from smiling. The track itself is easily digestible and endless fun. Synths and more synths couple with talk box vocals and tight drums playing in a strong bouncing rhythm. At several points it escapes its neon comfort, becoming more nightmarish as it plays with spoken word and atmosphere, before slipping right back into cyberspace. It’s simply seventies disco, for the future and clocking in at 6:48 it’s also your classic single length.
