THE WEEKLY ROUND-UP 08/03/19

Every Friday we’re going to try our hardest and provide you with a list of the tracks we’ve had on repeat all week. Here goes nothing…

The National – You Had Your Soul With You
The National are back with a brand new track. There are hints of Sleep Well Beast’s sonic trademark within this tune but it’s much brighter, happier, more upbeat, maybe The National aren’t as grumpy as we thought…

Sam Fender – Hypersonic Missiles
The BRITs winner is back with his first release since collecting the gong for Critics’ Choice and it’s another classy tune. Jeff Buckley and Bruce Springsteen comparisons ain’t getting shaken anytime soon however.

Mac DeMarco – Nobody.
Mac DeMarco is back in a lizardy-Voldemort-come-southern-oil-barren-smoking-a-cigar-in-a-dressing-gown, with ‘Nobody’. “The creature on television”, performs a slow, melancholic-but-chill number, with lots of what we’ve come to expect in recent years from the Canadian.

Lonesome Shack – Too Bad
Lonesome Shack return after a three year hiatus to give us some good old haunted boogie with “Too Bad”. Recorded at Sonic Boom Records, the track has a locomotive and hypnotising rhythm, a good sign for the New Mexico band’s upcoming album Desert Dreams.

Carla Geneve – 2001
The honesty and emotions in Carla’s songs will undoubtedly set her up for a great future. Another addition to the wave of folk-pop songwriters popping up, Geneve is going to keep telling her stories, and you better keep listening to ’em.

The Black Keys – lo/hi
The Black Keys are back with a tearing track looking to reinstate that old rock’N’roll cliche of ‘keeping it alive’. Big guitars hit big vocals, it’s a chicken tikka masala release – straight shooting and clean cut with fully expected fuzz and no surprises. The song resembles a rhythmic, ZZ top inspired version of ‘Spirit in the Sky’, not quite new and not quite old. It’s an interesting step, sounding more like their seminal albums Brothers and El Camino than the psychedelic Turned Blue. Make of it what you will.
