If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram, jealous of the mini-breaks to Marrakesh you can’t afford, Bryony Jarman-Pinto has your back. She’s curated that hazy, warm sound of August with her debut album Cage and Aviary and, frankly, it’s heavenly.

The album opens with the unapologetic ‘For The Birds’ –  an acapella oasis amongst all of the AMSR noise of 2019. The track is there, it’s 33 seconds long and it’s so full of Jarman-Pinto’s smooth, reassuring confidence a listener is left convinced it never needed music at all.

Sweeter than honey and slicker than an oil spill, Bryony has mastered a steamy juxtaposition of subdued vocals layered on her warm, jazzy back drop. In her memorable first single ‘As I’ve Heard’, she greets sun-seekers with a smile like she’s been expecting you. You didn’t find this album and its neo-soul sound, it was always here. It’s okay to like jazz-pop again.

Where other debut offerings are seeking approval, Cage and Aviary simply isn’t. Bryony saunters in, smooth and nonchalant in knowing she’s broken the rules and it sounds stunning. It’s tangy and creamy like a sexy sounding Twister lolly. What’s not to love?

Haiku Review
Sweeter than honey,
This album sounds like summer.
Jazz is back, baby.
