The Round-Up (20/09/19)

Bdrmm – Shame
A stecatto dream which moves with the pace of someone running in jeans, never chaffing but a good technique all round. Sounds similar to when we try to write a haiku and have to read back the syllables to ourselves. Goof stuff tho.

Halsey – Graveyard
Honestly, we thought this song was going to be really spooky (and maybe a bit shit) but it’s actually alright. It’s Halsey being upset about a boy, but she wasn’t about to break the habit of a lifetime now, was she? It sounds a bit boppier than the last time she was upset about a boy.

Holly Rees – Getting By
When Holly Rees said, “I’m doing great, I’m doing fine, I’m doing terribly”, who DIDN’T feel that? If you’re looking for a refreshing artist who isn’t bullshitting their way through trying to make it big (turns out it’s quite difficult), this is your track. If you need a soundtrack for life in general, this should be your track. This is your track, is my point.

Mandy Moore – When I Wasn’t Watching
My first pop star crush was Mandy Moore. Now, half a lifetime later, that voice has got me crushin’ all over again. Forget the pop star tag though, she’s now cooking up some homegrown Americana with a bit of help from the gents in Dawes. Seriously, it’s lovely.

Milky Chance – The Game
A smidge too chart-pop to really hit the spot, but what Milky Chance lack in bite they make up for in groove. Season with the spice of your choosing.

Noel Gallager’s High Flying Birds – A Dream Is All I Need To Get By
Noel Gallagher continues his ascent into cosmic pop omnipotence, as he guides you on another breezy journey through a psychedelic dreamscape. How high can these birds fly?

Puma Blue – A Dream Is A Wish (Live)
Yet another soulful, emotive track from Puma Blue, one that’ll make you want to light a candle for yourself and just lie down for a moment. It’s simple and sweet – it is Cinderella, after all – and at just two minutes long it leaves your heart and ears aching for just a little more. Bravo.

Scuba Dvala – Mumble
Set sail among the stars in this dreamy wash of synths and bass. Just the fifth track from this Swedish artist, ‘Mumble’ sees him take his foot off the pedal for a hushed-out moment. Think Tame Impala after a heavy joint.

Soccer Mommy – lucy
God, this is dark. In a good way, of course. The addition of the electric guitar in a more prominent position signals a new direction for Sophie Allison. Soccer Mommy produced one of the best records of 2018, hopefully this is the lead up to another gem.

Sparrows – La Chanson Du Kiskuki
Tokyo synth and the French language, it’s like this person knows our achilles heels, both of them. A fun track for fun people, not sure if it says something not fun but it seemed fun to me. Would make a lovely Nintendo game soundtrack.

Sports Team – Fishing
Well this was a fuckin’ hoot. I’m not usually a fan of non-melodic ‘singing’ but they sold it quite well. This one goes out to my fellow blokes still clinging to some semblance of adolescence – wanna go fishing?

Wallis Bird – Life Is Long
This is proper Irish loveliness. Like if Christine and The Queens had a sister from Galway. Life is long and this song is going to grow on you – it’s not going to change your life but at worst it’ll make you smile. Safe synths niceness.
