Pelicandy go down a dream

TC Beecham & Nicholas Mills, aka Pelicandy, take 80s decadence and create some serious grooves. It’s that kinda music that would go down really well at pres when you’re trying to impress a new group of people. They’ve just released an excellent new EP, give it a spin.

Howdy! Welcome to The Rodeo. How are you doing?
Good thanks! Just sitting down to a cheese and spinach gozleme and a Rodeo Q&A before I head to rehearsal.

What was the inspiration for the new EP? How did you get into the right headspace in the studio?
The inspiration for the EP probably comes from a want for understanding. Underlove attempts to peel back layers of humanity to reveal the love bubbling away underneath all our often hardened, stoic exteriors.

The headspace has been ever-changing – the EP being more of a gradual recording project writing and arranging as we go – it creates a multifaceted relationship with the music depending on your mood that day like how you get to know the different sides of a person. You realise why you love this song and this side of yourself but, also why this song can be a bit of a dick sometimes.

You’ve both got a cool style, who or what inspires your fashion choices, and what do your clothes represent to you?
Thanks. I like to keep things a bit different… but not too different. More and more these days I find myself dressing like my grandad.

How has the place you come from influenced how you’ve developed as an artist?
Growing up in Hertfordshire has given us a healthy appreciation for Watford hardcore and Morris dancing.

How does it feel to change your line-up? Is it a moment to regroup and change, or is a time to actually keep working with what you’ve got?
Around the time we were going through changes in our line-up I came across a book called “The Obstacle Is The Way” and realised that this wasn’t the end of anything at all, but simply the continuation of our musical journey.

Do you write with a different persona and character or autobiographically?
It depends- usually it’s autobiographical sometimes stretching reality for fun. I often find myself switching characters or perspectives mid-way through a song to represent both sides of an issue and to give me more to draw from.

Lastly, what are the plans for the rest of the year? What you got cooking?
I’m gonna keep writing. We’ve got a few tunes ready to take into the studio and many more gigs lined up. Keen to develop our new live show further and see how many confused looks we can evoke with it. We have a couple of London shows, both at Electrowerkz – 30/09 with City Calm Down and 15/10 with Thyla, a private show in Berlin on 17/10, and then back to London on 18/10 for Hidden Herd presents… at The Finsbury.

Listen to Pelicandy on Spotify and Apple Music.
