The Round-Up (04/10/19)

October is here: time for the spiced lattes, knitted jumpers and endless fucking pumpkins. Some things don’t change though, so allow your weekly Round-Up to carry you through the seasons.

Astrid Sonne – Strong, Calm, Slow
On the one hand, it’s a beautifully intricate arrangement. On the other hand, it’s a four-minute-long, tedious a capella that nearly induced sleep. Caffeine, anyone?

Beabadoobee – I Wish I Was Stephen Malkmus
‘I Wish’ opens the door for a trip back to that 90s aesthetic of dreamy vocals and chunky guitars. The flicker of youth runs through the track, with phrases like ‘you’re up your butt’ acting as cherry on top of the cake – honestly, I don’t know why it’s taken this long for that lyric to emerge. To see her confidence boost in this track compared to ‘Coffee’ shows a new and flourishing age of Beabadoobee, an age that I am definitely going to sing along to.

BLOXX – Go Out With You
Ophelia Booth, you go get some, girl. If whoever you’re lusting after in this grown-up, electric, down-right flirty banger sacks you off we will 100% go out with you. If you keep making tunes like this, we’ll probably propose.

CHVRCHES – Dead Stranding
There’s no escaping a track by CHVRCHES mind, is there? Those bold, cold vocals are gonna make you sweat like a sinner in a… well, a church. In this house we praise a strong aesthetic, but you could say it’s a bit samey for CHVRCHES. We wouldn’t say that, obviously. But it could be said.

Eli Moon – Black Roses
Eli puts himself under the microscope, giving us an intense and raw expression of his feelings, all the while making it sound super sexy. This what I imagine The Weeknd would sound like if he actually made good music.

Jennifer Vanilla – Space Time Motion
“People always ask, are you Jennifer Vanilla? And I always say, yes.” Jen hun what drugs were you on when you dropped this? That’s the real question. You mad, beautiful bastard.

Matt Maltese – Curl up & Die
Reminiscent of an old flame fizzled out, Matt’s honesty is as emotive as it is endless. A fantastic first return to the scene following Bad Contestant – serve wrapped up in a duvet for full flavour.

The Growlers – Pulp of Youth
Indie pop at its very sweetest, The Growlers have slapped us again. ‘Pulp of Youth’ is one for bedroom dancehalls and pavement catwalks – close your eyes and sway along. Purrrr.

The Japanese House – Something Has To Change
Just six months after a cracking debut album, The Japanese House is already spoiling us with more new material. ‘Something Has To Change’ is catchy, upbeat, and littered with that same epic production work that has come to characterise her overall sound. It’s been a good year for our gal, very good indeed.

The Lutras – Vari
Here’s a stunning little Scottish track that’s gonna make you excited about music again. It’s all strummed guitars, smoke and headlights for The Lutras – indie audio porn at its finest. Yee on the streets, haw in the sheets.

WENS – Cinderella
It’s fairytale versus reality in WENS’ latest love story. Luckily, the glass slipper is a neat fit from where I’m sat: this track hits all the marks it sets out to, without overdoing it. Understated and confident – a solid release indeed.
