In only 48 minutes, Angel Olsen brings a ravishing dichotomy of light and dark vocals to play. Like watching an eclipse, her gift of hauntingly beautiful darkness adds a shimmer to this body of work, and whilst some argue darkness to be disruptive, these ebbs and flows reflect an injection of vulnerability and love that makes the album as stunning as it is.
Within this battle, the string section builds an old Hollywood-esque glamour, adding stars to the ebony sky of Olsen’s melodies. The silver linings on each cloud build-up the serenity of the synths, shining down on you from above. But beware, the tinge of light within her lyrics burn if you stare too long, their sizzling vulnerability shake you up; “This city’s changed, it’s not what it was back when you loved me.”
Honestly, to not listen to All Mirrors is to miss out on a celestial spectacle, a once in a lifetime awakening of shadows that truly grips you to your core. Developing from album to album, Olsen has mastered the key elements of putting you in a to and fro monochrome madness. If I could sum it all up in one word, I would simply write ‘beautiful’, but even then, that is an understatement.
