Guilty Pleasures Anonymous: One Direction

Hello. I’m Caitlin, and I am a Directioner.

Beneath Harry’s zillion girlfriends over the years, and the iconic cannabis scandal involving Louis and Zayn which sent all Directioners into a social-media frenzy (instilling a particularly disgusted response from my 13 year-old self via my faithful-to-1D Twitter account, on which I accumulated 5K followers), lies an absolutely legendary boy band. Legendary, yes. I mean it.

Rewind a little, to six or so years ago when they were just shy of reaching the peak of their fame. The Twitter fandom was thriving: new pictures of Harry with his most recent romantically-linked females propelled everyday gossip, Zayn’s frequent new tattoos were swooned over, and new mates were being made every second through the common ground of having a sheer adoration for these five lads. I, for one, was having the time of my life – nobody could ‘Drag Me Down’. Being a fan back then was totally immersive and totally exciting.

Our boys had a track for every mood. Loved-up in a fleeting relationship you know will end once the sun goes back behind the clouds? ‘Summer Love’. In need of a cry, after a breakup? ‘Over Again’. Reminiscing on drunken nights out which end in a cheesy-chips-fuelled bliss? ‘Midnight Memories’. The possibilities were endless.

Now, I recognise a definite broad gap existed between the apparent quality and the actual quality of 1D’s music. But then, they were versatile, they were fun, they were brilliant… and I’ve still got a spec of hope in regards to them returning from their hiatus. *sobs*
