Captain’s log, Stardate 73249.1. Star Maps have detected signs of 90s grunge and blue hair dye being brought back to life in Beabadoobee’s five track EP, Space Cadet. I’m just kidding, the trekkie in me couldn’t help it.
In Space Cadet, Beabadoobee invites us into her explorer log; an experimental adventure of ethereal escapism, showing you it’s okay to leave your worries behind on planet Earth. With her candyfloss spaceship, grunge never tasted so sweet. Lyrics like ‘you should see the sun more often’ just hit you enough to erupt a small grin and a warm heart. Bea’s vocals bring this glow, something brighter than the stars, this modern uniqueness of the new Gen coming up to storm the charts.
In her rocket fuel we see a mix of 90s influences, the blasé nature of Pavement but the visceral intergrety of Sonic Youth, and as it burns, it ignites the fire that is 100% Bea. Whether it’s the chunky guitars from Pluto or the spectral synth from Saturn, every step of the journey is a sight or a sound to behold.
Space Cadet has planted its flag to let you know that this is only the start of Bea’s outer worldly conquests, and boy, is there a big solar system out there, so who knows what we’re to expect. I guess we’re gonna have to stay tuned for our Space Cadet’s next log …
