The Round-Up (25/10/19)

Another seven days have passed, and we’ve found ten great new tracks to show for it. A nice mix this week, we hope you’ll find something for that ‘Autumn 2019’ playlist you’ve just made – we certainly have.

The 1975 – Frail State of Mind
It’s back to their roots for these four; big synths and long instrumentals reminiscent of their second album, this feels like a hug with an old friend for long-term fans of The 1975.

Among The Citizens – In Your Car
It’s like an unpolished Two Door Cinema Club tune: the dance-floor sensibilities are strong with this one, but the charm isn’t fully realised yet. The potential sure is there though, I look forward to hearing what else they’ve got.

City Park – Getaway
Noice. Very Noice.

Easy Life – Nice Guys
A real funked-up change in direction for Easy Life, ‘Nice Guys’ hits the nail on the head. Bouncing with an excellent groove, it’s a great showcase of their musical ability – I can’t wait to see where they go from here.

Fickle Friends – Amateurs
I was looking forward to another upbeat, just-cheesy-enough pop banger from Fickle Friends, but this is a little bit meh. The opening verse is intriguing, the excitement builds at the bridge, and then… nah. The chorus needs more, I regret to say.

John Moreland – East October
Still one of country’s best kept secrets, Moreland is back with another gem fit for a dusty trail. Long story short: it’s a beaut, Clark.

L Devine – Peachy Keen
To be fair, it’s well executed. Poppy in nature, dancey in groove, I’m liking how much is going on in this new track. Decent.

Matt Maltese – Jupiter
Fit with a spacey start, Matt’s third single from the upcoming album sees him shift from piano keys to those of a computer. It works though, managing still to achieve a gentle, glowing softness about the track; simple and effective, it’s a thumbs up from us.

Rex Orange County – Face To Face
A capella vocals to start before a gradual rise into a groove – this is different from Rex and it’s good. With (almost) spoken word, a smattering of strings and his characteristic groove, it reminds us that this dude is actually pretty clever. The sentiment is also really cute, as a bonus.

The Orielles – Come Down On Jupiter
There’s a lot to this track, a credit to The Orielles’ ambition and confidence. A wavy verse teams up with a more centred chorus in ‘Come Down On Jupiter’, with successful impact. Listening to this sober makes me feel a bit drunk, I dread to think of its effects on a pre-soaked state of mind.
