Alex O’Connor, you psychedelic little hero. If you’re looking for the plot-twist you deserve in the last few months of 2019, it’s Rex Orange County’s third offering Pony.
He’s only 21 years old and frankly, that seems ridiculous. Rex has no business sounding this worldly, honest and cohesively produced. Pony spans ten tracks – not too long, not too short and about three tracks away from being too pretentious. It’s funky optimism at its finest and it’s just bloody meaningful.
O’Connor has put all of his time and shiny, disgruntled thoughts into ‘Always’ so it doesn’t sound like a bandwagon he’s jumped on. He’s held his indie-ish hands up and said he’s had a hard time, but he’s doing a little better now. Maybe we all are. ‘It’s Not The Same Anymore’ is a self indulgent six minutes long, but it’s a tasty closer for a well balanced LP. It’s no wonder Tyler, The Creator has such a music crush on this lad – we kinda fancy his sound, too.
You’re feeling like a five, Rex lad? You’re a solid ten. (… Bit hard not to quote ‘10/10’ directly on that one, but the metaphor was too accurate to give a miss).
Haiku Review:
Third times a charm, but
In the battle of Pony’s
Orville is the champ.
