Phoebe Bridgers

The Round-Up (13/12/19)

Wonder if Freddie Kreuger would wear a Santa hat for this Friday the 13th

TRACK OF THE WEEK:
Phoebe Bridgers – 7 O’Clock News / Silent Night (with Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger)
Singing ‘Silent Night’ over a collection of news headlines makes for a truly unique couple of minutes. Fresh, clever and effective, it’s a grounding reminder that the world doesn’t stop just because it’s Christmas. A commendable festive single.

Angelica Garcia – Jícama (Con Sal Version)
A fantastic example of a track that transports you somewhere else: close your eyes and allow the sounds of ‘Jícama’ to rescue you from the bores of your everyday. Angelica pulls on her Mexican-Salvadoran roots in this latest track, and it’s fucking awesome.

Bakers Eddy – On My Own
This is a rip-roarin’ good time straight from the land down under. Grab a handful of your best mates, gather yourselves in a basement or small living room, turn this way the fuck up and get ready to get sweaty. What a pleasant treat this was.

The Big Moon – Carol of the Bells
Classic meets contemporary in The Big Moon’s take on ‘Carol of the Bells’. Traditional in its harmonies with their own distinctive zest in the backing chords, it builds and builds before pulling back—it’s exactly what you’d hope for from these guys.

Camilla cabello ft. DaBaby – My Oh My
This is a really brilliant, but equally absolutely shit song; that’s a pretty big achievement in itself, you’ve got to give it to Camilla. It’s catchy, and could work wonders for unleashing your inner ho ho ho.

Bugzy Malone – December
‘December’ is going to be overlooked, no doubt about it. That’s a big fat shame. He’s been the unsung hero of the decade, quietly helping grime and just a bit of honesty stride its way back into the charts. Dropping the weekend before one of the most important political events the UK has ever seen, Bugzy’s got reflective upon having a personally massive 2019. Stormzy who?

Donovan Woods – While All The While
This is a perfect example of how one could classify Woods as a country artist despite not totally sounding like one. It’s all in the sensibilities. “While All the While” describes a pretty ordinary guy going through a pretty ordinary routine—he just so happens to be a romantic fucker as well.

Halsey – Finally / Beautiful stranger
This is ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift. At a push, it’s ‘Edge of Glory’ by Lady Gaga. Halsey’s boring us to death with more songs about the last Northern musician she snogged. Come on girl, pull yourself together.

John Moreland – Harder Dreams
As far as country music goes, John Moreland is an exception to the rule. He’s Southern born and bred, and despite doing his share of time in metal/hardcore bands his voice is tailor-made for country music. But you won’t find his stuff on radio or a CMA broadcast, he’s far too good for that. ‘Harder Dreams’ is one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve heard all year.

Pretoria – Gently
A slick 60s tune, soaked in fun and a hint of jazz. It’s a seasonal ode; an appropriately wintery contemplation of a break-up which sways and sways, propelling you along the witty lines and humming guitar licks throughout.

Submotion Orchestra – Show Me Love
Some sexy sax as Submotion celebrates ten years with a lovely cover of a 90’s classic—my, that’s a lot of [S]s. Robin S’s hit sounds more loungey, with a chiller house vibe than I remember it, but it’s a great tune to relax too.
