Round Up

The Weekly Round-Up (07/02/20)

Track of the Week: Hinds – Good Bad Times
The spanish four piece deliver a laid-back blend of lofi indie and solid pop. It’s catchy hook and story of a dragging romance that plays out in the lyrics is an experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

Beach Bunny – Promises
A rockin’ song to bring up the nostalgia of young love… well more like lost love. The impulsivity of the vocals just drives the track, filling you with this angry euphoria and the desire to message your ex just to ghost them.

Caribou – Never Come Back
A synthy, 80s under-toned, little piece of euphoria. It’s one of those songs which makes you feel a thousand times lighter as you listen to it – if that makes sense. Only Caribou can really do this. It’s like a Refresher candy stick, but in musical form; revitalising, sweet, and a little bit dreamy. Except, it doesn’t make kids go absolutely off their heads. Winner.

Fuzzy Sun – Pretty People/ Gentlemen’s Touch
Fuzzy band name, fuzzy singles. Pretty People brings the sun from behind the clouds, showering you in this shimmering ray of harmonies and all around goodness. But, in the blink of an eye, Gentlemen’s Touch brings the mistyness of the cloudy sky back, with lyrics set to bring the rain anytime soon. Just like toast and butter, fish and chips, and mostly importantly, a cowboy and his hat, the two compliment each other exquistely.

Gorillaz, ft. slowthai and Slaves – Momentary Bliss
Well what a wonderfully smooth ear fuck this is. This collab is fast, slow, ska-y, loud…. we’re left a bit out of breath and hoping it’ll text us back. From the outset, we couldn’t imagine how slowthai would have the room to share all that noise with Gorillaz AND Slaves – but it’s the trademark quirks of each that we love the most in one quick, sexy burst of noise. We fancy dirty English accents in music again.

King No-One – Not Willing To Sacrifice My Life
You won’t be expecting this sound from King No-One. Get your ears around the first 15 seconds (just bear with us) and then be prepared to be blown away. More northerners need synth over guitars now the bar has been set this high.

Lovelytheband – loneliness for love
It begins with a feeble bit of synth, and then plunges into a Cure-sounding plethora of bubblegum-post-punk rock goodness. Packed with a catchy rhythm and glistening guitar licks, this one is gonna be insane when performed at their upcoming shows. It’s Friday, and I’m in love with Lonely For Love.

The Magic Gang – Think
Starting with a guitar riff that’d make Stereolab blush, the gang are back and injecting that indie magic into our playlists. Of all the singles this week, this is the one to stay stuck on your lips, and impossible to get that catchy chorus out ya head.

Nadine Shah – Ladies for Babies (Goats for Love)
Bold and clever in its criticism of patriarchal goals, ‘Ladies for Babies’ has an aggressive edge dressed up with art rock inflections. Shah appears almost like a folk goddess with her astute, pronounced delivery, with the track’s spite coming out in full onn those sharp guitars that back the chorus.
