The Round-Up (6/11/20)

Track of the Week: Jade Bird – HeadStart
Jade’s back! This first single since her debut album last year, ‘Headstart’ carries a familiar emotivity rippling through her signature vocals: raw, honest, riveting. It’ll have you going, ‘Maybe I’ll actually pick up the guitar’ this new lockdown, just so you can sing along.

BIG IDEAS – The American Dream
A track about lost patriotism and our potential to improve our lives on an individualistic level. Amongst its saxophone and breezy vocals lies a witty, snappy response to the US’ current political climate. Jay Gatsby would be quaking after listening to this one.

Dead Pony – 23, Never Me
Fierce n fiesty, just how we like ‘em. Dead Pony really know how to serve up a hot dish, delivering an exciting single full of riled up guitars and an adios to the people trying to keep ya down.

Dirty Nice – Montevideo
Glossy, summery, and engaging, Dirty Nice’s latest drop ‘Montevideo’ is the antidote to our current dark and rainy existence. This track really is an escape, a fun, electronic jaunt through emotional experiences and a ‘beach in Montevideo’. It’s simple – easy melody, minimalist percussion, relaxing motifs and sweet sound effects – and that’s why it works. ‘We have to go find paradise within one another’ notes vocalist Charlie Pelling. Couldn’t agree more.

Ellie Bleach – I Thought I Saw You Last Night
In my opinion, there’s no better contrast than heartbroken words alongside a jaunty piano. Our local wedding crasher, Ellie Bleach, has crafted a ’70s reminiscent bop that really puts the ‘good’ in goodbye

Oscar Lang – Antidote to being bored
With upcoming EP Antidote to Being Bored set to be released in December, indie rocker Oscar Lang release the eponymous single, a three-minute blast of anthemic, noisy, britpop-esque music with a distinct garage rock influence. Its a little darker than past releases, but seems to be a style Lang has properly eased into naturally, like he was born for it. We’ll be waiting patiently for another good dose of lovely, lovely reverb.

Robbie & Mona – Wallpaper
‘Off-key sounds’ and ‘liquid-silk vocals’ defines ‘Wallpaper’, the ghost-like new single from Bristolian couple-duet Robbie & Mona. It’s an odd one, but a nice bit of surreality for your Friday – get it down ya.

Sophie Jamieson – Concrete
A slightly unnerving track about when Jamieson fell off her bike, in a road accident. It’s so real that it feels clinical, in places – from the minimalist instrumentals to the ringing, haunting sound of pianos keys being struck in the outro. ‘Ear to the gravel / Hear the world unravelling,’ her naked voice drowns out, the detail laid out bare for the listener. It’s a peaceful outer-body experience, with a scary dose of reality.

Tempesst – Walk On The Water
Tempesst definitely decided not to slack on the whole religious theme with this. The harmonies on the chorus make it feel like a hymn, which is benefitted massively by the lyrics about walking on water. Maybe you’ll hear this in churches sometime soon, who’s to say?

Tobi Adey – Hidden Truths (Giveon Garden – Kisses Remix)
Tobi has twisted this relaxing groove into something bliss. Incredible Yellow Days type vocals drift over the subtle and shaded piano, subdued yet moving.
