Track of the Week:
swim school – outside
In a time when live music is few and far between, it’s more than welcome to hear a song that feels like it’s being performed at full volume in a sweaty club. This week, swim school have blessed us with such a song. ‘Outside’ is a perfect amalgamation of catchy pop rock and fuzzed out indie. Throw in a little ’80s-esque production, and baby, you got a stew goin’.
Also new this week…
TOLEDO – David
If you imagine this song is about David Beckham, it’s a lot more enjoyable. But as it stands, it’s just another mid-tempo indie tune with reverb-laced vocals. Not bad. Not great. But definitely worth checking out.
Modest Mouse – We are Between
It’s been six years since Modest Mouse’s last record. This week, we got our first preview of their upcoming with ‘We are Between’. And it… sounds like Modest Mouse. So if you like Modest Mouse, you’ll probably dig the song. And if you don’t like Modest Mouse, well then go spend 4 minutes on something else. Like calling yer mum, perhaps.
Los Campesinos! – Allez Les Blues
The fact that it took ten years for this track to get an official release is insane, really. It’s full of energetic drums and catchy guitar riffs that epitomise the classic indie-emo sound. Pair this beat with angsty lyrics, and you have a song that will take you right back.
Frank Turner – The Gathering
Fun fact: Jason Isbell rips a solo on the new Frank Turner song. Still not convinced? ‘The Gathering’ has Frankie T back to his best, which is great after the polarising – see also, disappointing – No Man’s Land. It’s loud. It’s in your face. It’s a tad too “post-quarantiney”… but it’s Frank Turner, goddamnit.
Cian Ducrot & Cate – Know Me Again
With the weather taking a turn for the worse in the UK, our too-eager summer playlists have had to be placed on the back burner (momentarily). Fear not! Cian Ducrot and Cate have delivered the perfect ‘wallowing in self pity whilst watching the rain on your window’ anthem. It’s all haunting harmonies and piercing electric guitar: fitting really, because the track pierces your heart with its vivid heartache. Ouch.
Yoke Lore – Seeds
Yoke Lore should be all over the airwaves… or at the very least all over primetime television dramas. His voice is always like butter, and ‘Seeds’ is no exception. It’s a gentle, pulsing track perfectly suited for Spring.
Egg – putting a spin on sugar, we’re going down
Egg – who are you and where did you come from? Who would’ve thought someone could take the catchiest song from 2005 and turn it into something slow and beautiful? Check it out if you want some gentle nostalgia – she’s got a ton of these types of renditions if this particular one doesn’t suit you.
Alex Lahey – On My Way
This song comes from the soundtrack of the new Netflix animated flik, The Mitchells vs. The Machines… which, you should watch. Like, now. And if me telling you it’s one of the best films you’ll likely see all year isn’t enough, check out Alex Lahey’s pivotal cut ‘On My Way’, which is catchy as hell. A perfect recipe of pop influences and Lahey-isms.
