First Rodeo: Eleni Drake shares her ‘firsts’

Eleni Drake recently released new single, ‘A Wonder Day’, via MNRK. Produced by Eleni alongside Frank Colucci (Ashnikko, Ethel Cain), the track is her first new offering of 2025 and kicks off a hugely significant year for the exciting singer songwriter.

The track is a bittersweet reflection on nostalgia and missing someone you’ve loved. Speaking on the track, Eleni says:

“The song is a thank you to my best friend, the way they spark joy within me, make me feel understood, loved, cared for… A song isn’t nearly enough, but it’s essentially an ode to them. I wanted the music to emulate how I see them. Vibrant, warm, nostalgic.”

We spoke to Eleni about some of her musical firsts.

First Song You Wrote: My gosh, the first proper song I wrote – ‘wayward mind’ I believe it was called – must have been when I was 13 years old, I actually think I have a recording of it somewhere. Turns out I’ve always written sad songs! I remember thinking “this is the best thing I will ever write,” I hope I’m wrong. But upon reflection, it’s pretty cool to see where I started to where I am; I haven’t actually changed too much.

First Live Performance: Not one I even care to remember. I was 14, and my friend wanted to start a band… he asked me to be the lead singer, so next thing I know I’m going to band practices, learning songs, and we get a gig. Unfortunately for me, the place was very packed, turns out that’s where my fear of performing started. I tried my best to hide behind a microphone…. That didn’t work out. I didn’t perform in front of anyone for YEARS after that. I told myself for the longest time “I’m not a performer, i can’t do this.” I got kicked out the band anyways, they picked a male lead singer, which truly worked out for both of us – Josh is still one of my close friends to this day funnily enough.

First Official Concert:
Busted. I was in primary school, I remember begging my mum to take me and my sister. It was amazing.

First Festival: STANDON CALLING!

First Headline Show: The Courtyard Theatre in Shoreditch in 2021. It was a pretty surreal experience for me. I didn’t think anyone really noticed or cared about my music, but it was a sold out show, with a room full of people I didn’t know! It was such a big moment for me. I cried happy tears when people were singing my lyrics back to me! What an absolutely wild moment to think about.
