The
squashed stage of Think Tank usually poses trouble for bands, many ending up stepping on each other’s toes, yet Calva Louise coped well with the
surroundings and had ample space to let loose and get a small but invested
crowd jumping along. The shoddy sound system pushed the pummelling drum beats to
the forefront however, at times it was all you could hear, Jess’ grunge-inspired
vocal drowned out constantly.
It was a short-sharp show, played at a relentless
pace, but it was certainly too short. No risks were taken, and it felt like any
old Calva Louise show, not one that follows the release of their debut
full-length. Let’s just hope the decision to play it safe here doesn’t filter
into any future releases.
