Mattiel – Keep Your Change
This track’s been built on a construction site, but more importantly, Mattiel is back with her unique and poignantly beautifully vocal. The cinematic western sounds from her debut are pushed to the back for a slightly more mechanic, modern sound, but it’s a track that’ll put a smile on your face for sure.
The National – Light Years
It’s another poignant love song from The National with a beautiful piano line than twinkles, that’s the absolute stand-out. Berninger’s vocal is
Mini Mansions – Hey Lover
Oh boys it’s brilliant. Usually Mini Mansions go for a weirdo-pop anthem with a huge chorus but this time, whilst there’s a semi-huge chorus, it’s slightly more balladry, the duet between Zach Dawes and Alisson Mohart (The Kills) like a romantic phone call from the 90s.
Whenyoung – Future
They’ve announced their debut album and given us another tasting and it might be their best yet. A dreamy vocal, a chirpy guitar line, it’s trademark Whenyoung but there’s an increased grit on this track, we like it a lot.
The Amazons – Doubt It
The boys from Reading are back with more of the same. Brash and bold leather jacket rock and roll.
Gang of Four – Change The Locks
One of the finest punk rock bands have released “Change the Locks”. The group have tried to change with the times and stay relevant for over thirty years now and this is definitely a step forward from their more recent releases. However, the lyrics and vocals on this track are lackluster at best, imitating The Kooks Luke Pritchard throughout and finally answering that age old question: How many “oohs” and “ahhs” can you have before it’s annoying? The answer here is not a lot at all.
Say Sue Me – At The End of The Road
A quiet and cute cut that’ll make you smile. We profiled the band late last year and it seems they’ve moved from surf rock to a country indie style, can’t go wrong with this one for me.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Planet B
It’s only a metal track! This band just does what it wants, when it wants and it’s brilliant. Their last three singles have included a seventies disco track, a blues rock, ZZ top number and now this, a brash, hard and punching single.
