THE WEEKLY ROUND-UP (19/04/19)

Cover Artist: Mermaiders

YAWWN – New Life
A tropical tinge, a Noir bassline, there’s a contrasting mood at the beginning. Then it kicks off, properly, like a stream of confetti, a whirring pop song that’ll keep you smiling.

Pharrell & Beck – Saw Lightning
Appaz this is 20 years or so in the making. This deadly duo crossing paths in lifts and the like always promising each other they’d get together in the studio. “Hey Pharrell, studio soon, we need to get cookin'”. “Yeah sure Becky Boy, need to do that soon”. Same conversation, over and over again for 20 years. Fuck knows why it’s taken them so long, they haven’t done much in that period have they? Anyway, they’ve finally done it and the result? Well it’s Beck and Pharrell so what the fuck do you think? It’s epic.

FONTAINES DC – Boys in the Better Land
Channelling Patti Smith’s ‘Gloria’, the Dublin lads have got it absolutely spot on with this punk-tastic number.

Tame Impala – Borderline
Described by Matt Wilkinson at the best thing Kevin Parker has ever done, it’s probably worth checking out. We reckon Parker’s gonna dedicate this one to the donkeys when they play Blackpool. Just a gut feeling.

Olden Yolk – Cotton & Cane
The New York-via-L.A. duo are back with a quick follow-up to last year’s eponymous debut with another album. The first single from that, Cattle & Cane, sees their country-base expand to incorporate a bright and sunny feel influenced by their new surroundings, whilst British influences can be heard in the choruses. It’s a mighty fine track.

Mermaidens – You Maintain The Stain
What begins as a rather plain, monotone track, bobbing along at a friendly pace, quickly develops into a demonic sonic experience with grunge-infused guitar lines that crowd out your brain and give you whiplash. Don’t turn the volume up too loud on this one…

ESYA – Nothing
Available on YouTube, it’s a dark number that cuts straight through you. An anxious, unnerving wave attacks you as you listen. This song is following you, creeping behind you, watching your every move, it’s your stalker and there’s nothing you can do about it.
