Barrie’s debut LP, Happy To Be Here, is a poignant collection of alternative, explosive pop songs that mirror Barrie Linday’s, the band’s leader, constant daydreaming. The chaos of Manhattan is present in several tracks, whirring riffs clashing with demonic synth lines reminiscent of New York’s bustling streets. But the seedy nightlife of LA Noir comes to the fore too, before more upbeat numbers take you onto the California highways – there’s a constant battle between the east and west coasts.
It’s a diverse, multifaceted record that feels complete and fully formed, but with each track still managing to forge its own identity. There’s something for everyone on this album, which is friendly on the ear without being oversimplified. The only real shame is the lack of stand-out anthem, but overall, this album proves Barrie are on course to be the next big New York band, fo’ sure.
