Is slacker-surf-garage-pop a genre yet? If not, it should be. Melbourne band Jade Imagine create Sunny D indie-pop akin to their compatriot Courtney Barnett, with a dash of Hinds and a pinch of The Orielles – their debut album Basic Love is anything but basic.
It’s the aural equivalent of a breeze on the hottest day of the year; close your eyes. Imagine you’re on a beach with a beer as Jade Imagine’s sound envelopes you. Life is good; the sea swishes. Why not have that ice cream sandwich they only do abroad? Why not go for a swim? The opportunities are endless. Imagine.
Frontwoman Jade McInally’s vocals have a wistfulness about them which combine expertly with the lo-fi feel of the instrumentals. At 10 tracks as well, the record is just the right length, making for a really impressive debut.
