Rory Wynne is ready for a 4-date MCR residency

You’ve got the new single, ‘The Next Day’, coming out soon, it sounds quite different from your previous stuff, where does the influence come from?
This one was influenced quite a lot by two things. I really liked ‘Okay’ by LANY feat. Julia Michaels – just everything about it – so I tried to write something like that. However, it’s quite a subdued track and I usually veer towards a bigger sound. So, the production was a bit more Jack Antonoff influenced. I think it worked quite well.

What can you tell us about the song-writing process of this track, did it differ from previous songs?
This one was a similar process to my last single ‘Getting Over You’ actually. I came up with the music first, and then I had some lyrics in my notes that worked perfectly for the verse and it went from there! It only took 2 days to write and record, which was nice.

You’re preparing for your 4-date Zombie Shack residency, what made you pick that venue?
Well, I’ve been gigging in and around Manchester for 5 years now and it’s a venue I haven’t played. When I went to have a look around, it seemed very funky and I felt it was a good size for a 4 show residency.

Can you tell us what’s going to make each show different? Any tricks up your sleeve?
Yeah, obviously I want to make each one unique and there are a few things I’ve been working on in rehearsals to ensure each night is it’s own special night.

There are a few different support acts for these shows, were these picked by yourself? What are they going to bring to the shows?
Yeah, I picked the majority of them and I’m really excited about what they’ll bring to the shows! Dollie Demi are an exciting band I’d heard and seen a lot about; they’ll definitely bring energy and fun. Abbie Ozard has released two quality singles this year that have been stuck in my head, so I definitely wanted her on the line-up! I was sent a song of Valve’s that isn’t out yet, but I really liked it, so I thought they’d be a great addition to the show. Good Future will bring the shimmer. Josef Crow is a great performer and he’s just started up the solo project so I’m excited to see where that goes and glad to have him playing with me.

Does this signal the next step in your musical career?
I feel in a way that 2019 has been a next step and marked maybe part 2 of my career. Last year, I had a bit of time to develop, grow and mature and now I feel like I’m ready as a writer and a performer to really push on. Obviously 2017 had its peak with the Blossoms shows and I got a lot of experience from that but now I know what I’m doing on stage.

Finally, If there was one surprise guest you could bring out for one of these shows who would it be?
It would have to be Jack White. Mr White, if you’re not busy – I’ll have a guitar ready for you.
