Milky Chance – Mind The Moon

Milky Chance are bit like Coldplay, if Coldplay had grown up in Rochdale. Mind the Moon is a far cry from their debut folk sound. It shimmies in a smoother, hazier direction but ultimately, it doesn’t pay off. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The threesome have strutted in, reminding everyone they’re lyrical gangsters, and then, by about track seven, they’ve remembered that being music makers in 2019’s climate is actually pretty tricky. Everybody’s making music nowadays and you actually have to be good to get anywhere. And they’ve also just got a lot of shit going on at home right now, y’know?

It’s a confusing record, you’re left bemused at the end. ‘Oh Mama’ is the audio equivalent of those days when you leave the house and it feels like two degrees, but by lunch its absolutely sweltering – you wanted to look cool in your faux-fur coat but now you just smell like warm, vintage desperation.

The Milky Boys have wrapped up some deep thoughts on melodrama, girls and other really important things and it’s culminated in a progressive-ish noise. They’re not all sad, though. They’re just making tunes about life. It just so happens that life is a little sad right now.
