Doc’n roll film fest announces expansion plans

Doc’n Roll Film Festival is the UK’s only film fest dedicated to movies about music. It runs from November 1-17 in a range of London cinemas, but last week announced plans for events in Brighton, Liverpool, Hull, Bristol and Manchester, next year.

“It was set up to rattle the cage of the risk-averse UK cinema scene, by supporting first-time filmmakers in kicking doors down and getting their crowdfunded music docs out to the widest possible cinema audiences,” says Doc’n Roll founder, Colm Forde.

“We knew there was a niche, yet large audience of alternative music and films fans out there weren’t being served by these gatekeepers.”

It’s pic & mix lineup of music documentaries – totalling to 31 – puts focus on music-makers and genres from polar ends of the spectrum, from Zambian rock to Krautrock, jazz to jungle, prog to folk and noise rock to feminist punk, all the way to alt-rock. Basically, anything goes.

One of the latest additions to the lineup includes Foals documentary, Rip Up The Road. A live concert film, it captures a deeply personal and cinematic take on one of Britain’s most beloved bands. Mixed by legendary producer, Alan Moulder (The Cure, U2, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails), it was filmed over a twelve month period during their world tour, and features exclusive footage from their career-highlight shows at Alexandra Palace. The documentary will be shown Monday 11th November, 6:30pm at Rio Cinema, with a subsequent Q&A with the director and members of the band.
