Myspace, Austin Powers, and The Millennium Dome… it’s crazy to think they all joined our lives 20 years ago in 1999. It all seemed much easier then (especially for me being only a few months old at the time), but the one thing that reigned supreme over it all was beloved Britpop. Oh, how we adored it.
20 years later, Shed Seven are reintroducing this adoration with their remastered version of Going For Gold, bringing back all those fuzzy memories of the 90’s, and it just shows you, has anything really changed? Tunes about boozy nights out, heartbreak, and poking fun at the arseholes you meet; it may as well be a modern classic! Witter’s bright vocals ooze through, like a mate recalling his wild conquests where you can’t help but just pull up a chair and fall into their story.
But, for a greatest hits album, instead of going for Gold, they only managed to grab a bronze. The resurrection of the glory days felt like a trip down memory lane, a trip that you swiftly felt like taking a snooze on. The initial buzz of Shed started to wear thin, as you realize there’s nothing new to be added. As toe-tapping as the tunes are, the question remains on WHY did they bring them back from the 90’s kicking and screaming, when it was doing just fine staying back in the land of double denim?

Going for the gold,
But after losing the race
They take second place
