THE WEEKLY ROUND-UP (24/05/19)

Cover Artist: Ezra Furman (Artwork)

The National – Rylan
It’s up there with the finest things they’ve ever done this one. The demo version on YouTube is decent, but after a polish up, The National have made ‘Rylan’ even better. Maintaining the experimental instrumentation that’s become a core part of their sound, ‘Rylan’ sees them produce a pop song of sorts. Yes, really, a pop song, by The National.

Hatchie – Obsessed
We love Hatchie. Just bought our tickets to see her actually, you should do that too. This is the third offering from her debut album and it’s a dreamylicious pop number as per usual. A story about obsession (no shock there) and how it’s ok to be an obsessive person. Lovely stuff.

Lana Del Rey – Doin’ Time
LDR takes us back to 1996 with a sublime cover of Sublime’s ‘Doin’ Time’. Taking the track and drizzling it in Cali sunshine, there’s a glistening glamour to this version. Now time for that album Lana.

The Amazons – 25
It’s a good ol’ rock’n’roll track with a lot of roll, a touch of grit and nice tempo to keep it tickin’ over. The Amazon’s sophomore album arrives today.

Mannequin Pussy – Who You Are
A chirpy number that sees the band move away from their traditional punk format. It’s a song about self-doubt, an empowering number that sees the band tell everyone they shouldn’t wish to change, that everyone is perfect just the way they are. Nice message that ain’t it?

Ezra Furman – Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone
It’s rampant. A rush of blood, a rush of rage and a hint of Beach Boys. ‘Woo Woo’ in the verses, an Ezra caw and bang, it’s over. Ezra Furman doesn’t tend to stick around for too long, but in the time he’s there, it’s a load of fun. Quick, fast, catchy. Not many do off the cuff, alt-rock pop better than he does.
