LIVE: JESSE JO STARK

Tassels dangle down off the oversized suede jacket and a
pair of sparkling white boots appear to the sound of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang Bang’,
the first of two covers played throughout Jesse Jo Stark’s opening set, the second, ‘Betty
Davis Eyes’, getting the crowd well on side, the track being recognisable, making Jesse Jo seem more familiar to the many people discovering her for the
first time. She was playful on stage, messing around with the security guards in front, gliding across the stage, dancing along, like a scene from a 90s rom-com, moving and grooving in the bedroom, hairbrush for a microphone, the mirror as the crowd. A brave and gutsy set, she played with gusto, as if it were her own
headliner, as if the whole room was filled, just for her, everyone singing the
words back to her, and if that performance was anything to go by, one day soon,
I’m sure it’ll happen.
