A theatrical amphitheater like Gateshead’s Sage requires a truly
spectacular show, but Father John Misty’s
ability to deliver was never really in doubt. A lesson in charisma, swagger,
satire, performance and all-round showmanship, Misty put on a superb display. A
two hour set flew by as he switched between strumming an acoustic or dancing
around theatrically, acting out the lyrics adding another element of hilarity
to each line, the subtle lighting matching the mood brilliantly. The odd heckle wasn’t enough to phase the American, who was as
witty as his lyrics suggest, interacting with the crowd rather charmingly. It
truly was a spectacle to behold.
