ALBUM OF THE YEAR #1: BLACK HONEY

It’s been a long time coming but Black Honey’s first foray into the long play world was certainly worth the wait. Straying away from their earlier Tarantino sounds, Black Honey stomp forward with fresh pop sounds inspired by 80s Disco Fever and Izzy Phillips’ nightmares (seriously, she keeps a diary of them all). Inspired by Glam Rock, ‘What Ever Happened To You?’ and ‘Into The Nightmare’ have a strut and stomp that shows the current confidence of the quartet meanwhile the quick one-two opening of ‘I Only Hurt The Ones I Love’ and ‘Midnight’ show the band at their utterly breathtaking best, both possessing stadium-sized choruses that force you to walk with swagger. ‘Baby’ and ‘Blue Romance’ provide more tender touches and their cinematic feel encapsulates all that is brilliant about the Brighton band, both are dreamy delights with subtle bells, chimes and whistles, perhaps a nod to Hans Zimmer’s iconic True Romance soundtrack? It’s an album that shimmers at every turn and shows Black Honey’s seemingly endless potential, which will surely be realised fully over the next few years.
