DELACEY CHATS TO US ABOUT ‘MY MAN’

Hailing from Orange County, Delacey began writing songs and playing piano from the age seven, idolising the likes of Stevie Nicks and Billie Holiday. Over the years, she’s developed a self-aware and sharply poetic songwriting style, instilling each track with the melodic ingenuity. After helping out on songs like Halsey’s “Without Me,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as tunes with Demi Lovato and Zara Larsson, she’s made her own mark on the world with her debut single, ‘My Man’. A therapuetic love songs with a lavish and luxurious long song, it’s a strong star to her career.

Congratulations on the single release. How does it feel to have ‘My Man’ out in the world?
A little nervous but I’m also very excited. It’s the first song that I’ve ever released!

How did the song come about?
The writing process was more like a therapy session because it was a very real thing that was  happening to me the day I got into the studio so it all just poured out of me. In fact I came up with most of it on the spot and we kept it that way. I never intended for there to be a ‘theme’ behind the song but I love how it ended up having them anyway. It became a mix of vulnerability, confidence as well as song about women supporting women. Even though I’m admitting my insecurities I feel like a badass every time I sing it.

The video is impressive too, especially the house, where did you find that?
The director Jesse Hill found the location. The house is so beautiful and it felt like an oasis up there but the journey to get there was terrifying! We had to take a huge truck up this narrow pathway along a cliff. It was totally worth it though!

Where on earth did you find such an extravagant coat from?
I wanted to sleep in it that night I loved it so much. It’s vintage. All the best clothes are always vintage in my opinion.

How have you enjoyed the reaction to the single so far? What’s been the craziest thing that’s happened?
It’s been really amazing to see the different kinds of people who are relating to the song. I think people resonate with it because its not sugar coated. The craziest thing that has happened so far is definitely hearing my song on the radio and scream-crying.

You’ve co-written with many big names, what did you learn from working with those people? What are the differences to co-writing for someone else in comparison to writing your own tunes?
I mostly just feel grateful for the relationships I’ve made and songs I’ve gotten to be a part of. It’s really cool to see your art touch a lot of people. Every time I write it’s something I’ve been through or at least am inspired by, but when it came to my artist project there are no rules or restraints. I just become completely open. It’s basically a human diary of the shit I’m feeling and going through, even if it might make someone else uncomfortable. I try to always say exactly how I feel.

Finally, you’ve got a busy summer of shows planned. What can people expect from your shows and where are you most excited to place?
I am SO excited to play festivals because I never have before and you can probably expect me crying on stage during a song or two!
