The Round-Up (30/08/19)

As UK news somehow became even more unbearable this week, join us as we choose to look on the bright side. New tunes all round, baby.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)
Holy shit balls they’re back. It reeks, and I mean absolutely stinks, of noughties indie and it’s great. We missed you boys. We really did.

Cigarettes After Sex – Heavenly
Thankfully not abandoning their roots anytime soon, the usual dreaminess from CAS are back; encompassing intimate lyrics and their signature, seamless instrumentation. It makes you think of being serenaded on a secluded beach by sunset, and that’s fine by us.

Declan Welsh and The Decadent West – How Does Your Love
It’s a rockin’ pop track. There’s a stomp and a bop: the punk rockers have gone pop. Put the disco ball up, we’re having a P-A-R-T-Y.

FEVA – We’re Not Defective
FEVA have done what FEVA do best: here’s a proper filthy old-school guitar sound that The Hives could have only wished for. Loud enough to break out of that pesky “up and coming” barrier and into certified rock ‘n’ roll territory. Thanks FEVA.

Kim Gordon – Sketch Artist
This one is weird, indescribably weird. Not a good weird either… but not necessarily a bad one. I’m as confused as Kim looks in those new press images.

kwassa – good life / nyc (demo)
Dance-pop without overly cheesy undertones? A tough criteria for many, but not for kwassa it would seem. This single bleeds sunshine and good vibes, and the demo is especially telling of the good things to come from this emerging artist. Very exciting.

Lava La Rue – TLSL (Stitches)
Make way for our new hip-hop royalty: Lava La Rue is back. A sultry, soulful compilation of slick bars and mellow beats, this is another stellar follow-up to last year’s debut EP. She’s one to watch, I’m telling ya.

Mahalia – Square 1
A jazzy groove with a great, catchy chorus. Relatable, slightly painful, but definitely one you’ll be hip-swaying to in the kitchen, despite yourself. A killer track from Mahalia.

Sea Girls – Violet
Remember when you were a bit younger, and you really really fancied that girl and it was all just so important? Sea Girls do. ‘Violet’ is catchy enough, but it’s not going to set the world alight… unless you’re 14 and still into that faux-angsty soft pop.

We Are Parkas – Medication
We Are Parkas continue their sensational form with another banger, perfect for every mood. Sad? This’ll pick you up. Happy? Get prepared to be ecstatic. Lucky for you, this medication definitely isn’t prescription only.
